Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Life after Therapy

Life After OCD Treatment:
Slipping after Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) treatment is normal. In fact, behavior that has been maintained for any length of time can most likely recur. You can think of it as your new ways of behaving will be challenging that OCD bully. It is not going to like it but you will be ready with having a maintenance plan in place.
At Minds at Peace part of a therapy program will include a maintenance plan put together with your therapist. This plan prepares you for what a slip feels like so you are not caught by surprise from that OCD bully.
Here are a few examples of what could be included in a maintenance plan for OCD.
1. What might some of your thoughts sound like that would support giving into an urge? “It’s okay if I slip just this once.”
2. What triggers might make ritualizing more likely? Getting sick? Being tired or hungry?
3. What will be your coping plan? Exposure, talking to support person, support group?
Remember being open and honest with family and close friends can also be a supportive maintenance measure. If they are aware of your maintenance plan they can play an important role in catching you when you have slips.
