Life long benefits to exploring Identity and Self-Concept in Therapy
Identity and Self-Concept in Therapy
What is it that makes us who we truly are? Is it our friends, family, life experience, genetics, society, work…? Is who we are right now, who we will remain?
At all stages in our lives, what makes us who we are is constantly evolving. Exploring our identities in therapy involves comprehending various aspects of our self-concept, such as our beliefs, values, interests, and roles in relationships and society. This process typically entails exploring past experiences, cultural influences, and societal pressures that have influenced our self-formation.
Through therapy, there’s an invitation to gain a deeper understanding of how our identity has been shaped and how it impacts our thoughts, emotions, and actions. By examining and learning about these facets of ourselves, we can strive towards cultivating a more genuine and consistent sense of self. This can result in a heightened self-awareness, self-acceptance, and an improved sense of purpose and satisfaction in life. This can also help in proactively combating other mental health struggles that include anxiety, depression, procrastination, focus/attention and goal setting to name a few.
Everyday life can get busy, and we do not often have the opportunity to explore these themes. At Minds at Peace, we strive to provide the time and space for our clients to delve deep into the various aspects of their lives that make them who they are. We do this through exploring beliefs and values, family systems, and other influences in our client’s world. If we are able to understand the sources of what makes us who we are, we have the capacity to unlock a vast potential for personal growth and development at all stages of life. Contact Jordan Sweeney at Minds at Peace today to discuss how we may assist you in developing an individualized plan in exploring the distinct parts of yourself and how they come together to create a unique individual.
